Deptford Design Festival
Deptford Design Festival has become a vital part of the annual London Design Festival, showcasing Deptford's design on an international platform and enhancing its reputation as a hub of creative activity.
Launched in 2003 after Creative London identified the creative sector as an area of economic growth in Lewisham, and design as the fastest growing area within this, its aim was to reinvigorate the image of Deptford from a place in decline to a place of talent and opportunity for young designers. The first event saw the work of 14 designers exhibited in the railway arches of Resolution Way. Later projects have included the redesigning of 200 litre industrial recycling bins into exhibits, ranging from a metal sofa to a mechanised picture booth, and featuring the Artmonger's cow bins which have become an established part of New Cross, and open studio events at Cockpit Arts.
Recently DDF has also used events to signpost a new audience into Deptford, such as a three day event at Spitalfield's market and 2007's Market Challenge involving the redesigning of an assortment of objects collected from Deptford market by international and local designers, and exhibited at South Bank's Royal Festival Hall.
