Maudsley Hospital
During the century since psychiatrist Dr Henry Maudsley funded the building of a new mental hospital, Maudsley has established itself as the largest mental health institution in Britain.
Initially founded to provide for acute and early cases along with teaching and research, dramatic changes to the mental healthcare system have led the hospital to expand, and to eventually merge with Bethlam, Lewisham and Guy's Mental HealthTrust and Lambeth Healthcare. Further growth and development will be needed to keep pace with these changes and significant expansions have been planned for the next three years.
Creative Process ran a Charrette to discover how Maudsley needs to respond to the continuing transformation of mental healthcare provision. How will the treatment of mental health exist in the future and what part can buildings play in the healing process? The Charrette was used to tap into the insight and knowledge of all staff, service users, their families and stakeholders to shape the hospital's future, to inspire the new designs for the hospital and identify areas that need change. At the end of the four day process, all the feedback and ideas were collated into a document which will provide a collective vision that can inform development, and the future of the hospital.
